Who is a candidate for the lap band procedure?
Typically, the lap band procedure can be performed on someone whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is 35 or higher and/or you have a disabling condition as a result of your weight. You may also need to hvae the following to be considered a candidate: be obese or extremely overweight for at least five years, have no history of alcohol abuse, you are not depressed or have any other emotional disorders.
How is Gastric Banding done?
The gastric banding procedure can be done by making a large incision in the abdomen or by the laparoscopic method; using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery. The band divides the stomach into a small upper pouch about the band and a larger pouch under the band. This small pouch limits the amount of food that a patient can eat at any one time and will result in them feeling fuller. The band can also be adjusted to control how much food passes from the upper to the lower part of the stomach.
How much weight loss can I expect after this procedure?
Typically, patients who undergo the lap band procedure lose anywhere between 40-50% of their pre-procedure weight over the course of 1-2 years.
Are there any foods that I cannot eat after undergoing the procedure?
Most patients find they are unable to easily tolerate red meat, pasta, rice, fresh bread and fibrous foods. You will be asked to eat three meals a day with one planned snack. you should chew your food very well and swallow slowly.
